Entry #0: Blog Opinions

Being part of the first generation to grow up with technology at my fingertips, I’ve spend most of my life connected to the internet in some way, from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and even blogs. I used to read a few blogs, but I think that overall, blogs are beginning to lose popularity due the the rise of video sharing and social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. Many people, including myself, find it easier to watch a quick video on a topic rather than to read an entire blog page. Personally, I prefer these social platforms as well because I am a more visual learner. However, this hasn’t stopped me from exploring what a well written blog has to offer.

One blog I read that I particularly enjoyed was The Blonde Abroad. I liked how the blog was organized in different ways. You are able to browse based on travel location such as (Peru, Iceland, Colombia) or by the type of travel (solo, female, luxury, budget). This makes it very easy for readers to find exactly what they are looking for. I also liked how the audience is more able to connect with the blog author due to the more personable style of writing. She doesn’t need to make a social media video to get a feel for her personality because you can feel it through her writing. The author also uses high quality photos that she takes herself in each of her posts, and uses different text styles and text boxes to keep the blog format interesting and non-repetitive. I think this blog accomplishes its purpose of educating and being informative for both experienced and novice travelers of all types, as well as those interested in some bonus lifestyle content on the side.

A blog that I personally did not find appealing was Pouted Magazine.  My personal dislike of this specific blog, as well as blogs of a similar format/model, was mainly due to the lack of personality in regards to the writing styles and format. It was much more formal, and carried a variety of different topics, seemingly trying to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible instead of connecting to a more specific set of readers. The content on these types of blogs seems to be more mass produced to gain a large following, as opposed to being more thoughtfully and uniquely created.

Despite the differences between these two blogs, it seems like they are both well set up and appealing to their desired audiences, even though one blog may be preferable to the other depending on the reader. The authors use great writing techniques and delve deep into their blog topics of choice. Overall, I think that blogs are a great and effective way to both share and receive different thoughts, opinions and ideas.

  1. I agree that blogs that show the personality of the writer are much more interesting and engaging to read! I love traveling so I might check out The Blonde Abroad blog, thank you for linking it! Growing up with the internet at our fingertips has definitely been a wild ride, I too enjoy watching videos rather than reading through an entry.
